If you have read lots on Lincoln there is nothing really new in this book. One thing this book does do however is gives an interesting overview of how Lincoln approached his presidency and war in general. McPherson points out that Lincoln was very adamant on taking Lee’s army when some of the other General’s were more worried about Richmond. Lincoln also hated how long the war was taking and wishing they would move quicker to the South’s chances. This book gives lots of correspondence between the president and his Generals and even some of the letters Lincoln did not send.
