When the Wright brothers visited Elizabeth City in 1903 on their way to Nags Head to try out their flying machine, they commented the Elizabeth City would be one of the next big port towns.

Butcho goes all out in this book, capturing the history of the small town of Elizabeth City and the surrounding area.  Living in Elizabeth City this book is a real gem.  I learned about many of the houses and some of the original uses of the buildings.  I found out what I thought to be slave quarters was actually an asylum currently located on the back of a church lot. There were also some maps from the 1800’s before many of the buildings were located downtown.  From this book, I can see how Elizabeth city thrived and grew early on.
