This book deals with loneliness, grief, and falconry. When Macdonald’s father dies her world spins completely out of control. She doesn’t know how to deal with it. She stops paying bills, stops talking to friends. But one thing she does is get a Goshawk. Now I knew nothing of falconry before reading this book. Macdonald a long time bird lover and falcon trainer does a great job explaining lots of aspects of falconry in laymen’s terms. Throughout this memoir, she weaves T.H. White’s story of how he trained his hawk. I knew little of the author of the Sword and the stone. But Macdonald seemed to find solace in his story and her time in nature with her hawk Mabel.
